ABOUT US

“In my opinion, American Top Team is the BEST MMA camp in the country!” – UFC Commentator Joe Rogan

Malachy Friedman, coach of Kimbo Slice, Ufc’s Hector Urbina and Leo Kuntz is a black belt instructor at the #1 SCHOOL FOR MMA TRAINING IN FLORIDA. After training and coaching for over 8 years at American Top Team headquaters, in Coconut Creek, Florida; Malachy decided to bring the ever evolving Carlson Gracie jiu-jitsu to Charleston, SC.  Malachy Friedman received his black belt under legend Ricardo Libório; widely regarded in Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) as the top black belt ever produced by Master Carlson Gracie, and an all around legend of the sport. Liborio was recently crowned 2015 ADCC Superfight Champion by defeating Mario Sperry. Liborio created two of the best teams in the world one being Brazilian Top Team and the other American Top Team, one of the MMA world’s biggest powerhouses.

ATT as it’s commonly referred to, has trained and developed over 100 plus fighters in the largest Mixed Martial Arts (“MMA”) organizations such as the UFC (“Ultimate Fighting Championship”), WEC, Strikeforce, Bellator, PRIDE, K-1, DREAMS and Sengoku.

That same knowledge, born out of hard work, perseverance, and dedication honed from our professional MMA and BJJ fight team, has been passed down to our students who train in: MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (“BJJ”), Submission Grappling, Judo, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Kids MMA, Women’s Fitness, and Self-Defense. Our training methods have deep roots in the Martial arts world.

Our lineage can be traced back to the legendary Carlson Gracie, where his vision, open-mind, and trademark aggressive attacking style have greatly influenced us.
We bring all of this knowledge to our students where we instruct and train beginners, advanced, kids and adults all with the same desire to help you achieve your goals.

Michael moved down to Charleston about 2 years ago to start medical school and pursue his dream of becoming a pediatrician. Martial arts have been a big part of his life since he participated in Taekwondo throughout his childhood, but he found his true passion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he began training at ATT Lowcountry shortly after moving down to Charleston. Since then, he’s gained a lot more confidence than he ever had and met a lot of new friends. Juan

Juan has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Malachy Friedman since 2015. He has competed in multiple tournaments with podium finishes in IBJJF and NAGA. But his tournament wins don’t begin to tell Juan’s BJJ story.  Born in Washington State, Juan has lived in Charleston since he was 2 years-old. Always active, Juan played soccer throughout high school and college. Today, Juan runs a concrete company and is no stranger to hard work. He can swing a sledgehammer with the best of them, but even after days of breaking concrete, you’ll never hear Juan complain. In January of 2015, he walked into a MMA gym and was in awe of the gracefulness and beauty of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Juan began his BJJ journey a few days later, but honestly didn’t expect BJJ would have much of an impact on his life. In fact, it would change his life dramatically. Before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Juan suffered social anxiety so debilitating that most days he couldn’t bring himself to make eye contact with strangers and was even shy around friends and family. Today, as a Blue Belt, Juan credits Jiu-Jitsu with making him very sociable and relaxed, and believes he is proof of what an amazing personal transformation Jiu-Jitsu can provide! As a BJJ enthusiast and a parent of a young child, Juan is very excited to share his passion for Jiu-Jitsu and help kids become their very best selves.
