Local Amateur Boxer Wins State Golden Gloves Championship in His 1 st Fight Ever

CHARLESTON, SC – Rico Gabriel, training out of ATT Lowcountry in Charleston, SC, won the SC Golden Gloves Title
February 23, 2019 in Greer, SC. He moves on to the regional championships in Knoxville, TN.
Gabriel who weighs in at 141 lbs., has been training for only eights months when he registered
for the South Carolina Golden Gloves. At first, Gabriel was mistakenly matched with a boxer
who was only 17 years-old, so organizers quickly found him a last-minute match. Gabriel took
the gutsy move and accepted the fight, and won the Golden Gloves by decision.
“If I took the first fight, I would not have been Golden Gloves,” said Rico Gabriel.
Gabriel, a Spartanburg native, trains at ATT Lowcountry in West Ashley under Isaac
Betancourt-Sabillon, Jay Perez, Kevin Nguyen and head coach and owner Malachy Friedman. “Rico stuck to his strengths and adapted in the fight against a very wily opponent. He showed composure and
fight IQ in his first fight,” said Friedman.
Coach Jay Perez, a former Golden Glove Champion, Diamond Glove Champion, and New Jersey
State Champ represented the United States in the 1997 and 1998 Olympic Tournament.
Coach Isaac Betancourt-Sabillon, an Elite USA Boxing competitor and worked as a trainer at the famed Church Street Boxing Gym. Coach Kevin Nguyen is a No-Gi, Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Boxing, and MMA competitor.

Mary Ann Koller, boxing in her first tournament after just six months training at ATT
Lowcountry, won 2 nd place in the Elite Female Division of the SC Golden Gloves tournament.
Both Gabriel and Koller are graduates of The Citadel. Koller received a commission in the U.S.
Army upon graduation from The Citadel in 2017, and Gabriel is a graduate assistant in clinical
counseling at The Citadel.
Former Golden Gloves participants include Joe Louis, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali.
