BJJ FOR LIFE: FOCUS

BJJ FOR LIFE: FOCUS

Part 1 – KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL

As a kid, I heard this adage innumerable times in one form or another from my parents, my coaches and teachers. Focus! It was hard for me as a kid to focus when there are so many appealing distractions vying for my attention, and it’s still hard when now I encounter the ever-growing digital distractions that follow me everywhere. But I have learned that I can train my mind to focus like I train a muscle. All it takes is consistent practice.

BJJ is not only excellent physical exercise, it’s excellent brain training. All that excellence takes effort. So, while your child might love BJJ training 4 out of 5 times, it’s not uncommon that they might want to skip training every now and again. Bring them to class anyway. We will take over from there and remind them to KEEP THEIR EYE ON THE BALL during class. Later, praise your child for their effort and know that they are building their FOCUS MUSCLE one practice at a time. Next to the heart muscle, it may be the most important muscle in the body.

Focusing on the bigger picture

Some days you feel unstoppable, the world is yours, and then…why do I even come to class? These are the days of growth, of perseverance. Lessons you learn on the mats can be applied to your daily life. Consistent exposure to an emotional roller-coaster will make you unbreakable. Accepting defeat and realizing it is not over, it’s about coming back stronger. BJJ does not just make you physically stronger, it makes you mentally stronger with every class.

Welcome defeat, I’m unstoppable! Oss
